My Turo rental for the weekend

I don’t know anything at all about Porsches but I reserved this Cayman for the 3 day weekend coming up in LA. For a paltry sum of about $372 (all fees included) I get to enjoy this beast for three days and 300 miles. The limited mileage part is a bummer but works perfectly for my planned usage anyways. This is my third manual rental through Turo and likely to be the most fun vehicle yet. Canyon roads out to Malibu should be exciting!

Let me know how your experience is. I am doing my first Turo in Philly in about 2 weeks. Got a newer 7 series for a 3 hour drive to a wedding. Also reserved a z4 for Hawaii in March

300 miles in three days would actually be quite a lot, since I assume the trip has some already pre-planned activities other than drive a Cayman.

Damn I can rent an F Type R for $300 a day over a weekend. Which I am thinking of doing at least once.

The way I look at it is 300 is just enough to explore a little bit and not have to worry about the mileage. Usually though when I have gotten a rental in LA I have at least a half a day to go cruising around all I want so I could easily burn 200+ miles in one day out in Angeles Crest or the Santa Monica mountains. If I had unlimited mileage, we would certainly plan to do more driving just for fun. My girlfriend enjoys riding around in nice cars, especially if we can cruise down the PCH and such. But yeah, we have other things planned than just driving so it should work out perfectly.

It has been great for my other experiences. Much better than typical rental cars and the pricing works very much in my favor generally. Cars that are newer and have lower mileage tend to be more expensive on Turo. And I don’t care about that at all so it ends up being cheaper. All I care is manual and fun so it works out quite well. I dont think Turo is that widespread but in areas like LA, it is bountiful!

Same thing happens when I look anywhere near home in NJ. There are a decent number of cars around but they are mostly econoboxes that I could get cheaper from the traditional places and the only interesting manuals are ungodly expensive. Like $200 a day for an s2000 with a 100 mile per day limit? FORGET THAT!

I always think that it sounds expensive to do something like that, but really any traditional “exotic rental” place would easily charge over $1k per day for that. And they would be so much more obsessive over insurance and rules. I like that renters on Turo tend to be pretty laid back (although some listings have scared me off with how many rules they posted).

Yeah true, I mean for a birthday gift to myself I might rent it for a day or two.

The two F Type R’s I’ve seen have had great reviews from frequent renters. One guy definitely uses this one of the F Type’s to fake stunt once a month because he has left a bunch of reviews 3 weeks apart.

One of the cars I rented, the owner was talking about how someone frequently rented his car for about a month at a time. Apparently people use turo for short term leasing sometimes. Interesting concept.

Oooh... this is a good idea. We’re meeting up with some of our family (who currently live in Tawian) in Carmel, CA this upcoming April. Maybe I should see if there’s something fun to drive along the coast.

That probably would cause a mess for liability concerns. If people werent so sue happy, I bet that would be a nice way to work things out. Cut out the middle man since Turo takes a good chunk of change for themselves.

Carmel/Monterey is such a nice area and that is the perfect time of the year to head out there! And it is Carmel by the Sea if you want to be particular. What a pretencious town name...

Anyways, yeah definitely worth looking. You can get some fun stuff pretty affordably that way. It doesnt usually end up a whole lot cheaper than just renting a car the traditional way but I think it is a way better experience overall.

Yes yes, but everyone calls it Carmel. I’ve never been to that area of California (I’m from Washington state). I figure if I’m paying $35-50 per day per day over the cost of your run-of-the-mill Altima, it’s definitely worth it for the fun and experience!

Also... it’s better than being jammed in the rental with car-sick-prone Uncle Brian :-/

In NJ, we have an Avon-By-The-Sea that everyone calls just Avon as well.

That area of California is wonderful. My first road trip ever in California was from LA up to Monterey and I recall going over to Carmel for some nice meals. It is a nice village there.

Definitely try to get a convertible if you can. Of anywhere in the world, the California coast is the place to have one! But it depends how much you like that I guess. I daily a Miata so getting a convertible is normal to me.

Right?! I’ve never driven a convertible. Acutally, never driven IN a convertible at all. Such shame. But you don’t see many around Washington, so whatever.

There are two great options in the area, a 2008 BMW Z4 and an 2014 MX-5 Hard Top, both of which come in at ~$220 (+15% basic insurance coverage) for 4-days / 3-nights. That’s only about $100 more than it would be to get your run-of-the-mill Ford Fusion (OR SIMILAR) for the same amount of time.

That seems like a great deal. I would definitely prefer the Z4 but thats because PRHT Miatas bother me with their existence lol. Would certainly be a nice car to have though. Hard top convertibles make it a much better experience when you have to drive with the top up since its basically no compromises versus a coupe.
